PMDD counselling — support for premenstrual dysphoric disorder

Specialist support from a counsellor who understands PMDD from the inside out.

What is PMDD?

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe hormonal condition that affects around 5–8% of women and people who menstruate. It goes far beyond typical premenstrual symptoms — PMDD can cause intense mood changes, overwhelming anxiety, deep depression, irritability, and physical discomfort in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.

Many people with PMDD describe feeling like a completely different person for one to two weeks each month. Relationships, work, and daily life can feel impossible during flare-ups. The condition is often misunderstood or dismissed, leaving those affected feeling isolated and invalidated.

If this resonates with you, know that you are not alone — and that specialised counselling can make a real difference. Understanding PMDD is the first step toward managing it, and that is exactly what we work on together.

How counselling supports PMDD

As a PMDD warrior myself, I bring both professional training and lived experience to our sessions. I understand what it feels like when your own cycle becomes your biggest challenge — the frustration, the guilt, the exhaustion of explaining it to people who do not understand.

Using evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), we work together to build practical strategies for managing the emotional and psychological impact of PMDD. This includes:

  • Identifying and tracking your symptom patterns across your cycle
  • Building emotional regulation skills for luteal phase episodes
  • Developing self-compassion practices to counter the shame and guilt PMDD often brings
  • Creating communication strategies for relationships affected by PMDD
  • Establishing a personalised coping toolkit you can use between sessions

What to expect in your sessions

Each 45-minute online counselling session is tailored to where you are in your cycle and how you are feeling that day. Some sessions may focus on processing difficult emotions from a recent flare-up, while others may be about building skills and planning ahead.

Sessions are available on Tuesdays and Fridays, and because PMDD is cyclical, we can adjust session frequency around your luteal phase when you need the most support. Online sessions mean you can access support from anywhere in Australia — no commute needed on the days you are already struggling.

Whether you are newly diagnosed or have been living with PMDD for years, counselling provides a space where your experience is understood and validated. You deserve support that meets you where you are.

Who is PMDD counselling for?

PMDD counselling may be right for you if:

  • You have been diagnosed with PMDD or suspect you may have it
  • Your premenstrual symptoms significantly disrupt your relationships, work, or daily life
  • You feel like a different person during certain phases of your cycle
  • You want support from someone who truly understands the condition
  • You are looking for practical coping strategies alongside medical treatment

Counselling works well alongside medical approaches to PMDD. If you are also seeing a GP or psychiatrist, we can work as part of your broader mental health support team.
