Depression counselling — find your way back to yourself

Compassionate support to help you move through depression at your own pace.

Understanding depression

Depression is more than feeling sad. It can feel like a heavy weight that makes even the simplest tasks — getting out of bed, responding to messages, or enjoying things you once loved — feel overwhelming. You might feel disconnected from yourself and the people around you, as though you are watching life happen from behind glass.

Depression affects people in different ways. Some experience persistent low mood and fatigue, while others notice irritability, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, or a sense of emptiness that will not shift. It can be triggered by life events, relationship difficulties, major transitions, or sometimes appear without an obvious cause.

Whatever your experience looks like, depression is not a sign of weakness — it is a signal that something needs attention. And with the right support, it is possible to feel like yourself again.

Our counselling approach

At SoundSpace Counselling, we use evidence-based approaches that are proven to help with depression. Our sessions draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to address both the thinking patterns and emotional experiences that keep depression going.

CBT helps you identify and challenge the negative thought cycles that feed depression — the "I'm not good enough" or "nothing will ever change" beliefs that can feel so convincing when you are in the thick of it. DBT adds powerful emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills that help you cope when things feel overwhelming.

Together, we work on:

  • Recognising and reframing unhelpful thinking patterns
  • Building daily routines that support your mental health
  • Developing emotional regulation skills for difficult moments
  • Reconnecting with activities and values that matter to you
  • Establishing a self-care plan that works for your life

Every session is a collaborative space. You set the pace, and we work together toward your goals. There is no pressure to rush — your counselling journey unfolds at a rhythm that feels right for you.

How sessions are structured

Sessions are 45 minutes and delivered online via secure video conferencing. This means you can access support from the comfort of your home — whether you are in Perth, regional Western Australia, or anywhere else in Australia.

Sessions are available on Tuesdays and Fridays. Depending on your needs and treatment plan, sessions can be weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. We will find a rhythm that works for you and adjust as you progress.

Each session typically includes a check-in on how you have been, exploration of what has been happening, practical skills work, and collaborative planning for the week ahead. You will leave each session with something tangible to take with you.

Signs you might benefit from depression counselling

You might benefit from depression counselling if you are experiencing:

  • Persistent low mood or sadness that lasts more than two weeks
  • Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy
  • Difficulty sleeping, or sleeping too much
  • Fatigue and low energy, even after rest
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, or social situations

You do not need a formal diagnosis to seek counselling. If something does not feel right, that is reason enough to reach out. Depression counselling can also work alongside support from your GP or psychiatrist as part of a broader mental health care plan.
