Migration counselling — support for life in a new country
Compassionate support for the emotional journey of migration and building a new life.
The emotional reality of migration
Moving to a new country is one of life's biggest transitions. While it can bring exciting opportunities, it also brings challenges that are rarely talked about — the loneliness of starting over, the grief of leaving people and places behind, and the exhausting effort of navigating a new culture, language, and way of life.
Many migrants experience a complex mix of emotions: gratitude for new opportunities alongside deep homesickness, excitement about the future mixed with anxiety about fitting in, and a shifting sense of identity as you navigate between two (or more) worlds. These feelings are completely normal — and they deserve proper support.
As someone who has personally experienced migration, I understand these challenges from the inside. At SoundSpace Counselling, we create a space where your migration experience is understood and where you can process what you are going through without judgement.
How counselling helps with migration
Migration counselling addresses the unique psychological and emotional challenges of building a life in a new country. Using evidence-based approaches including CBT and DBT, we work together on:
- Culture shock and adjustment — processing the disorientation and frustration that comes with adapting to new social norms, systems, and expectations
- Homesickness and grief — honouring what you have left behind while building a meaningful life where you are now
- Identity and belonging — navigating questions of "Who am I here?" and finding a sense of self that bridges your past and present
- Isolation and loneliness — developing strategies to build new connections and a support network in your new home
- Relationship strain — addressing the impact of migration on relationships with partners, children, and family back home
- Anxiety and depression — managing the mental health challenges that can emerge during the migration journey
Why online counselling works for migrants
Online counselling is particularly well-suited to people who have migrated. You may be in a new city where you do not yet know your way around, or in a regional area with limited local services. You might be juggling work, study, and settling in — with little time to spare for travel to appointments.
With online sessions, you can access support from wherever you are in Australia. Sessions are 45 minutes and available on Tuesdays and Fridays, with flexible frequency to suit your needs. All you need is a private space, a device with a camera, and an internet connection.
For many migrants, online counselling also provides a sense of privacy that can feel important when you are still building your social network. There is no waiting room, no risk of running into someone you know — just a safe, confidential space to be yourself.
